Don’t let this myth about Shopify apps cost you money

There's a myth that gets repeated a lot around Shopify, that you need to install a huge stack of apps just to make your store actually work. It's one of the bigger misconceptions we come across, and it's led a lot of merchants down a path that ends up costing them more than it saves.

The idea isn't completely unfounded. Shopify deliberately doesn't try to build software that works for absolutely everyone. They build the core well, and they leave space for others to fill in the more specific requirements. That's a sensible approach from their side, and it's exactly why the app ecosystem exists in the first place. The problem isn't that apps exist, it's how they tend to get used.

Where it goes wrong

What we see a lot is merchants adding apps one at a time, whenever a new need comes up, without really stopping to think about what they're actually trying to achieve. A conversion tool here, a bundling app there, something for reviews, something for upsells and something someone recommended in a Facebook group. None of these decisions look unreasonable on their own. But a year or two in, you end up with a store carrying ten or fifteen apps. Several of those apps likely overlap, some have been forgotten about entirely, and all of them are adding weight to page load and monthly cost.

The store doesn't fail because of a single app in your stack. It gets slower and harder to maintain because of all of them together.

What Unified do instead

Our approach tends to be a bit different. Where there's a well built, well purposed app that does exactly what's needed, we're genuinely happy to use it. There's no point rebuilding something that already works well and is maintained properly. But for a lot of the more custom functionality merchants ask for, we'll just build it ourselves rather than reaching for an app first.

The advantage isn't just quality, although that matters. It's that when we build something custom, it does exactly what that business needs and nothing else. There's no extra configuration sitting unused, no dependency on a third party's roadmap, no risk of the app being sold, deprecated, or changing its pricing model six months down the line. It's also usually faster once it's in place, because it isn't trying to be flexible enough for every other merchant using the same app.

Two questions to ask before adding an app:

  • How many other things on this store are already doing something similar?

  • Would I be better off with one properly built solution instead of three overlapping ones?

That's not an argument against apps generally. Plenty of them are excellent and save a huge amount of time and cost compared with building from scratch. It's more about being deliberate. Knowing what each app on your store is actually for, whether it's still needed, and whether it's the right tool or just the first one that came up in a search.

Build for complexity

This becomes even more important the more complex a business gets. A single brand with a straightforward store can usually get away with a slightly messier app stack. A multi-brand group, or a business with real B2B complexity running through it, feels the cost of that mess far more quickly, because every extra app is another thing to keep consistent across every part of the estate.

If your store has grown its app list faster than anyone's had time to properly review, it's worth taking stock. We're open to have a look and tell you honestly which of them is earning its place and which of them isn't.
